Ancient Mesoamerica: Cities, Codices, and the Problem of Evidence is a five-week, secular high school deep-dive that challenges students to move beyond memorizing dates and civilizations to investigate how history is actually written. Instead of accepting historical narratives at face value, students learn to evaluate archaeological discoveries, primary sources, colonial records, and modern scholarship to answer one essential question: How do we know what we know about the ancient world?

Designed for grades 9–12, this moderately rigorous course emphasizes critical thinking, source analysis, evidence-based reasoning, and historical interpretation. Students examine the rise and development of the Olmec, Maya, Zapotec, Teotihuacan, Toltec, and Mexica (Aztec) civilizations while learning to recognize bias, evaluate competing historical interpretations, and distinguish between primary and secondary sources.

Rather than presenting history as a collection of simple facts, this course asks students to analyze complex questions such as:

  • How reliable are the surviving sources on ancient Mesoamerica?
  • How did archaeologists reconstruct civilizations whose records were largely destroyed?
  • Why do historians sometimes disagree about the same evidence?
  • How do Indigenous cultures continue to shape the modern world?

Throughout the course, students complete analytical essays, discussion responses, research activities, map and timeline projects, source evaluations, and a cumulative research portfolio. Every assignment is supported with detailed grading rubrics, making the course approachable for independent learners and parents with no formal teaching background.

Important Content Advisory

This course examines history honestly and respectfully. Students will study mature historical topics including warfare, conquest, slavery, epidemic disease, colonization, religious practices (including human sacrifice as a historical subject), and the destruction of Indigenous records. These subjects are presented analytically, without sensationalism, and within their historical context. Parents are encouraged to preview the material to determine its appropriateness for their student.

If your student enjoys asking why historians believe what they believe rather than simply memorizing names and dates, Ancient Mesoamerica provides an engaging, college-preparatory exploration of one of the world's most fascinating civilizations while developing the analytical skills needed for higher-level history and social science courses.
